Regal Springs’ tilapia fish hits restaurants in the UK!
The UK is known for its enviable culinary scene, with restaurants and chefs all over the country celebrated for their innovation, skill and dedication to quality and excellence.
But with climate change weighing heavy on the public’s conscience and the cost-of-living crisis continuing to rear its ugly head, tightening the purse strings of many British businesses and consumers, sourcing ingredients that are not just delicious and high-quality but eco-friendly and affordable too is a top priority for the nation’s eateries.
Responsibly farmed fish is becoming an increasingly popular solution, with more and more people realising the many health and environmental benefits of including more sustainably sourced seafood in their diets. White fish is a common choice, with delicate, mild flesh, low fat percentages and high protein contents that make them incredibly nutritious and versatile.
And as restaurants look to diversify their fish selection to mitigate the overfishing of popular species, we’re starting to see some lesser-known varieties on the menu — including our very own sustainably farmed tilapia, thanks to some exciting recent partnerships…
New UK customers for Regal Springs Europe
Regal Springs Europe is delighted to have formed new relationships with established UK-based restaurant groups to allow more British consumers to discover the wonders of premium tilapia fish.
We have two partnerships to announce: one with Greene King restaurants and one with the Las Iguanas chain.
Both companies are purchasing our sustainably farmed tilapia fillets and loins from our wholesale and distribution partners, presenting new opportunities to introduce the public to this tender, tasty, nutrient-dense fish.
Supplying sustainable seafood for Greene King
Greene King came to us directly through Maris Seafoods, which specialises in frozen produce.
The Greene King brand is a household name with a rich 200-year heritage and over 2,700 pubs, restaurants and hotels nationwide.
As the country’s leading pub retailer and brewer, Greene King takes its eco-responsibility incredibly seriously — placing ‘caring for our planet’ at the forefront of its Environmental Social Governance (ESG) strategy.
It’s led several sustainability initiatives, such as introducing a reverse logistic recycling process, installing 1,600 electric vehicle charging points across its pub car parks, becoming a founding member of the Zero Carbon Forum for hospitality and brewing businesses and being one of the first pub companies to work with anti-food-waste app Too Good to Go.
The company’s other ‘Greene King for Good’ pillars — caring for communities and creating life opportunities for all through innovative social mobility programmes — mirror Regal Springs’, making this a perfect partnership for driving towards our shared goals.
Spicing up white fish with Las Iguanas
Las Iguanas is purchasing Regal Springs tilapia through Brakes, the UK’s leading wholesale food service supplier.
Founded in Bristol in 1991, Las Iguanas focuses on celebrating the flavours and joys of Latin America. Its authentic menus often feature colourful, punchy fish dishes — a nod to the many seafood staples of South America, Mexico and beyond.
Like Greene King, Las Iguanas cares deeply about ensuring all its suppliers source fish products from sustainable producers, rejecting red-rated endangered species and requiring evidence of sustainability management from fisheries.
The company aims to work with the Marine Stewardship Council (MSC) to improve the sustainability of its food chain and for all fish products to be sustainably certified as soon as operationally possible — a mission that our responsibly farmed tilapia is helping to achieve.
Regal Springs is thrilled to work with these iconic restaurant groups, which will soon serve our premium tilapia products to their discerning customers throughout the UK.
Sustainable white fish for British restauranteurs
Regal Springs’ premium tilapia fillets and loins are the ideal white fish products for UK-based businesses dipping their toes into the world of sustainable seafood.
Having received a Superior Taste Award from the International Taste Institute’s jury of renowned chefs and sommeliers in 2022, our aquaculture experts are proving that this freshwater fish can live up to every expectation of quality and flavour.
Its flaky flesh is free from chemicals, packed with vitamins and contains up to 23 g of lean protein per serving, making it the perfect choice for health-conscious foodies. Plus, its mild taste and firm texture make it easy to handle for a range of dishes, suitable for poaching, frying, steaming, grilling, baking and more!
Most importantly, our tilapia products are certified by the world’s leading health and safety bodies, including the Aquaculture Stewardship Council (ASC), the Global Seafood Alliance (GSA) and the British Retail Consortium (BRC).
We’ve invested heavily in our responsible aquaculture system, feeding our tilapia a vegetable-based diet, meticulously monitoring the water quality in our deep-water pens and working with local communities to care for the precious forests along our lake shores.
As a result, our award-winning tilapia is an excellent choice for any restaurant that wants to offer a sustainable, affordable alternative to other common white fish varieties like cod or haddock.
Although many people in the UK and Europe are yet to try tilapia, its popularity is spreading from Latin America, Africa and the Middle East, where it’s already widely consumed — meaning the global market for this robust white fish is growing.
So, if you want to stay ahead of the curve and discover the freshness and versatility of this incredible fish for yourself, give it a try today!
